Pink Eye Allergies

Conjunctivitis is the most common as well as treatable eye condition among adults as well as children. It is often known as “pink eye” and refers to the inflammation of the conjunctiva. The latter is the tissue that forms the lining of the eye. It helps in keeping the eyeball as well as eyelid moist.

Bacteria, viruses, irritating substances such as dirt shampoo, smoke, chlorine in the pool, allergens, sexually transmitted disease, (STD) can cause conjunctivitis. Pink eye that is caused due to STD, bacteria, viruses can spread very easily from person to person. It is not a serious problem if it is diagnosed promptly.Allergic conjunctivitis is not conjunctivitis.

One must know if pink eye is due to allergies or perhaps infection as the treatment mode is different.

Symptoms of Pink Eye

  • Redness in the white of eye or eyelids.
  • Itchy eyes.
  • Increased tears.
  • Blurred
  • Swelling in one’s eyelid.

Treatment of Pink Eye

  • Ocular (topical antihistamines): These medicines lessen the swelling, reduce the redness as well as itching, by the method of blocking the histamine actions. Histamine is the chemical that causes the symptoms of the allergy. These medications are available over-the- counter as well with help of a prescription.
  • Ocular (topical) decongestants: These medicines lessen the redness by constricting the small blood vessels in one’s eye. Of course, they must not be used on a long term basis.
  • Ocular (topical) steroids – In case the problem is not taken care of by other medicines, then the doctor is likely to prescribe some steroid eye-drops to get rid of the symptoms of conjunctivitis. These must be used in consultation with doctor as they can result in elevated pressure within one’s eye which can damage vision.
  • Cromolyn – This medicine prevents the release of histamine by ensuring the prevention of specialized cells.
  • Immuno therapy – One can take allergy shots for treating the pink eye.

How to get rid of pink eye symptoms?

  • In case you are using contact lenses then remove them.
  • One can try out non-prescription “artificial eye-drops” that can get rid of burning as well as itching sensation.

Pink Eye Allergies Precautions

  • Wash hands with soap as well as warm water.
  • Do not rub or touch the affected eye.
  • Avoid eye-makeup.
  • Do not share one’s eye make-up.
  • Wash the pillowcases, towels, linen in hot water as well as detergent to lessen allergens.
  • Avoid wearing another person’s contact lens.
  • One must wash one’s hand before applying ointment or eye-drops in the eye or even in your child’s eye.
  • Prefer wearing glasses rather than contact lenses.

Pink eye can cause much discomfort. One must seek medical help to get rid of it.
