Castor Oil for Arthritis Treatment
Since ages, castor oil has been used for different therapeutic purposes. Castor oil is well known for its healing properties. It can be consumed internally for its nutrients or applied topically for its warmth.
Castor oil is a rich source of ricinoleic acid which is a therapeutic unsaturated fatty acid. It is this fatty acid that is responsible for the therapeutic properties of castor oil.
Today, using castor oil for arthritis treatment is very common. Arthritis is a condition in which a person suffers inflammation of the joints. It affects different people in different ways. The most common forms of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and gout. Though arthritis is not fatal, it can greatly reduce the quality of an affected person’s life. It makes the joints very stiff and the pain can often be quite severe.
The best way to use castor oil for arthritis treatment is to heat the oil and smear it on the affected joints and to gently massage the area with it. It is also recommended that castor oil be massaged onto the spinal chord, lymph drainage channels and abdomen along with the affected joints.
Due to the chemical composition of the oil, it is very warm and usually heating it is not required. However due to its heat, it can be a strong laxative and therefore should not be consumed in large quantities. If you do not want to smear the castor oil on your stiff joints, you may make yourself a castor oil pack which will give you similar results when used. To get the maximum benefit out of a castor oil pack though, its better to heat the oil first and then use it as a pack on the affected joints.
Apart from using castor oil for arthritis treatment, such an oil pack can also be used to stimulate the liver. The oil is also useful for constipation, pain and stiffness in body parts, improving circulation of blood and hormones, improving digestion and inducing relaxation of muscles by soothing inflammation.
Arthritis is a disease that is offered little relief by medication. In many cases, the medicines are so strong that they leave various side effects – some very lasting. It is therefore suggested that alternate therapies and remedies like castor oil be used instead of these strong medications that have potentially harmful side effects.
