Arthritis is a degenerative disease in which there is severe wear and tear of the joints. What starts as a low grade inflammation of the joints, gradually turns into this disease. The cartilage that covers the joints and protects them from shocks begins to wear due to the inflammation. This can cause severe discomfort in the movement of the joints. In fact, when severe, arthritis is a debilitating condition.

Arthritis can effect all the joints of the body, especially the hands ands the knees. As the cartilage begins to wear out, the bone comes to the surface and movement becomes very difficult.

Though there are many other debilitating conditions that may effect a person’s hands, hand arthritis symptoms are very specific and can identify if a person is suffering from arthritis in the hands.

Some of the common hand arthritis symptoms are:

• Dull pain and numbness in the hands. Usually, the hand is put to a lot of use. however, when a person is suffering from hand arthritis symptoms, there might be burning sensations in the hand that range from mild to severe. The grasping and gripping postures may cause continuous wear of the cartilage. Eventually, performing these actions becomes difficult.
• Discomfort in the hand increases in humid weathers. If you are suffering from arthritis, the wrists begin to ache a lot during humid or rainy weathers.
• The affected joints, after a brief period of pain, can also become inflamed. The joints of the fingers and the wrists become inflamed and it is difficult to perform fine motor activities. The amount of stress and exertion that the hands are able to bear become less and less.
• As the pain in the joints of the hands becomes more apparent, the pain reverberates through the surrounding joints too. If the surrounding joints are still used, the inflammation increases over a period of time.
• The swollen joints in the hands are usually warm to the touch.
• There is a loosening of joints which may not be too apparent owing to the inflammation. However, in the times of remission, when the swelling subsides, the looseness of the joints can be seen.
• Small cysts may begin to develop on the fingers. There may be irregularities in the hands with portions that are inflamed and loose followed by dents in the skin. This usually happens due to a combination of changes in the bone structure due to demineralization and the degeneration of the cartilaginous tissues.
