Morning Stiffness Causes
A lot of people often experience a strange stiffness in their body when they wake up in the morning. Experiencing stiffness, first thing in the morning is not very pleasant. Stiffness may cause reduction of movement and mobility.
Morning stiffness is a common symptom of various diseases and disorders. Such stiffness in the joints or other parts of the body need to be shown to a doctor as soon as possible so that a correct diagnosis can be made and treatment can be started.
Some of the common morning stiffness causes are:
- Acromicric dysplasia – This is an extremely rare genetic disease in which the extremities of the body are very short. The bone maturation is abnormal in this condition because of which the affected person may suffer from a short stature in addition to abnormally small feet and hands. There is also a general retardation of growth and bone maturation is very slow.
- Adrenal gland hyperfunction – Also known as Adrenocortical Hyperfunction, this is a condition in which the adrenal cortex produces aldosterone and cortisone in abnormally high quantities. This can cause Cushing’s disease and hyperaldosteronism. Due to this disorder, the muscle bulk in the body increases abnormally, causing stiffness in the body alongwith a restriction in regular movements.
- Arthritis – This is a degenerative disease in which the joints of the body become inflamed due to constant wear and tear. This is an irreversible, degenerative disease which cannot be cured. The two common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
- Autoimmune Thyroid Disease – This is a condition in which the body’s immune responses confuse the production of thyroid with an antigen attack. The immune system tries to counter the production of the hormones by attacking thyroid. When thyroid is thus attacked, the production of thyroxin becomes affected and stiffness in the body can be felt.
- Connective Tissue Disorders – The connective tissue is the soft elastic tissue that helps in the movement of the various joints of the body. It is due to the connective tissues that we are able to perform almost all motor activities. If the connective tissues begin to degenerate, stiffness may set in all the joints.
- Fibromyalgia – This is one of the rare conditions which medical science hasn’t been able to explain. One of the more common morning stiffness causes, in this disorder, the body responds painfully to pressure. 70-80 percent of people who suffer from fibromyalgia, experience morning stiffness during the course of their illness.
