Back pain and Mattresses
Selecting the right mattress is very important to ensure a restful night and to avoid back pain. So far firm mattresses have been recommended to ensure that one’s back is free from pain,but off late softer mattresses are recommended.
Sleeping on the wrong kind of mattress can worsen low back pain. It is better to invest in mattress that provides much comfort to the back. If sufficient support is not there from the mattress it can result in poor posture and also strains the muscles. A mattress that provides back support can reduce lower back pain.
Traditional view and latest opinion
A study published in Lancet recommends softer mattresses to provide comfort to the back. The view held is that softer mattresses apply less pressure on the shoulders as well as the hips that allowing one to sleep comfortably.
According to Jenny McConnell, a back pain specialist at the University of Melbourne claims: “These findings come as a relief to clinicians who are not only struggling with the day-to-day management of patients with chronic back low-back pain but are also constantly bombarded by the lack of efficacy of therapeutic interventions. Until now there has been little empirical evidence to support a clinician recommendations.
Traditional view has been that firm mattresses alleviate back pain and almost 75% orthopedic surgeons recommend it. On the whole those who used medium-firm mattresses reported the easing of low back pain. They were also less likely to go in for pain- killer treatment.
Dr. Francisco Kovacs, Kovacs Foundation, Palma de Mallorca, who led the study says,” Our findings stress that recommendations for daily living, such as what kind of mattresses to use may have a relevant effect on the clinical course of low-back pain.”
Dr.McConnell is of the view that the next step of investigations is to observe scientifically why softer mattresses were better.
Tips while purchasing mattress
- Choose the one that suits you the best.
- Check up the stuff that the mattress is made up of, the coils, springs etc.
- Find a mattress that can support the back. Sufficient back support can avoid muscle soreness.
- Go in for quality and do not hesitate on account of cost.
A proper mattress is essential in order to avoid back pain while sleeping. A good mattress helps in ensuring good sleeping postures and muscle relaxation.
