Back Pain in Children

Back pain is a very common ailment among adults. Among children it is rare and is symptomatic of underlying disease. This is mostly the case among younger children, who do not experience overuse injuries on account of strenuous exercise. Normally, overuse injuries do heal up quickly. In case one is not able to ascertain whether the child is suffering from overuse injury or the back pain is due to other diseases such as fever, bladder dysfunction or bowel movement, or motor and sensory problems ( the child loses sensation in the arms or legs.) then one must consult the doctor.

The exact incidence of back pain among children is not really known, but it does increase with age. Chronic back pain disorder is rarely found among children.

Back pain among children is also accompanied by high fever, sleepless, nausea,loss of weight, behavioral changes.

Causes of back pain in children
The primary causes of back pain in children are:

  • The back pain could be related to any of the organs such as the heart, kidneys and lungs, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract or perhaps the central nervous system.
  • Injury.
  • Sitting or perhaps standing in wrong posture.
  • Spondyloysis.
  • Herniation of child’s disc.
  • Pott’s disesase – TB of the spine.
  • Pyelonephritis – Back pain can occur due to kidney infection.
  • Diskitis – Infections in child’s disc.
  • A Schuerman’s kyphosis

Signs and symptoms of underlying diseases that cause back pain

  • In case there is no overuse or trauma.
  • Joint pain as well as arthritis.
  • Child feels tired easily and there are changes in his or her activity level.
  • Pains that wake up the child from his or her sleep.
  • Fever.
  • In case there is improvement with analgesics.
  • Pain changes – the pain can be better or perhaps worse as the child changes his or her position.
  • Bladder control or loss of bowels.
  • Change in appetite.
  • Motor weakness.
  • Problems in gait.

When such symptoms occur it is important for the doctor to make further investigations to find out whether the child is suffering from any other health condition.
