Back Pain in the workplace

Office goers experience back pain as they have to perform many chores. Women particularly have extra load as they have to take care of the household work as well as office work.

Back pain in the work place can cause much discomfort. It can interfere in one’s work performance. Many tend to take leave when they suffer from back pain. Also their workplace performance also comes down. Obviously, the respective company or organization suffers in terms of work performance of their employees.

Even managers and trade union leaders have expressed their concerns for back pain at work place. Even they have to accept that their employers often go on leave due to this problem. They try to address this problem as much work suffers if an employee is on leave too often and for a longer period of time.

Organizations and companies provide time for their employees to relax and also provide them with recreational facilities. This allows the employee to take some time off from the strenuous tasks he or she is performing.

Causes of back pain at workplace

  • Heavy and tedious manual labor. Dealing with heavy tasks in industry.
  • Manual handling in several places such as deliveries.
  • Repetitive tasks like for example manual lifting of objects.
  • Driving for long distance and being at the wheel for a long time.
  • Sitting at the workstation for long periods of time such as in front of a computer.

Certain physical activities can also aggravate the condition:

  • Bending or crouching or stooping, such as working in front of a computer and maintaining a poor posture.
  • Pulling or dragging or pushing heavy objects and too much load.
  • Working beyond one’s usual limits, in other words overstraining. Working beyond one’s capacity can cause back pain.
  • Twisting, stretching and trying to reach.
  • Poor way of lifting things.
  • Staying in one position far too long. This can cause postural strain.
  • Any kind of situation that leads to the body getting vibrated, jolted suddenly and jarringly.

Prevention of back pain at workplace

  • One must try to relax and take part in recreational activities.
  • Have back support while sitting for long hours in a particular position.
  • Do not cross your limits. Do as much as you can physically and mentally.
  • Take time off from work. A break helps to recuperate.
  • If the pain is unbearable then consult a doctor.

All may not experience back pain at work place, but some are more prone to such health condition.
