Causes of Back Pain and Lower Back Pain
Pain in the back can be quite painful, causing much discomfort. Complaints of lower back pain are the most common. Most back pain do occur for a while and resolve a within a span of 2 weeks. Back pain can be frustrating. One may find it difficult to sit and walk and move freely.
It is essential to understand the cause of the back pain, which will help in its treatment. It is easy for patients to recover from back pain if they know the causes.
Causes of lower back pain or back pain
- Muscles get strained and cause back pain. Patients may not initially know what is the cause of the muscle spasm. But the good news is back pain lasts for only few weeks.
- Discogenic back pain is considered to be a common cause of pain in the back. This is due to the damage caused to the invertebral disc but sans disc herniation.
- The invertebral disc gets ruptured, also known as herniated disc is another reason for back pain. The treatment of herniated disc much depends on the situation and individual.
- Spinal Stenosis is also cause for the back pain in an aging population. As one grows older the spinal canal becomes constricted due to arthritis and other conditions. In case the spinal becomes very tight, it can result in back pain.
- Lumbar spinal arthritis is very common since arthritis affects the joints, the knees and fingers. Any joint within the body system can also get affected by arthritis including the smaller ones. Arthritis in the back can cause pain due to movement.
- Spondylolistthesis also results in back pain since neighboring vertebra become very unstable. The common cause of such condition is degenerative changes that are caused due to loss the normal stabilizing structures of our spinal column.
- Osteoporosis – This can cause a lot of orthopedic problems as well as generalized discomfort. Back pains due to osteoporosis are linked to compression fractures of the vertebra. Osteoporoses results in weak bones and cause such fractures.
Treatment of back pain
- Avoid strain to the back.
- Applying ice.
- Application of heat.
- Medications.
- Medical evaluation if required.
Back pain can be very discomforting. It can hinder your physical activity and work.
