Causes of Scoliosis
Scoliosis is not considered to be a disease. It is quite often referred to as a medical condition that is comprehensive. It refers to the curvature in the spine. It refers to the abnormality in the curve of the spine. It is hereditary as those suffering from it have children are likely to pass it to their off springs as well.
The head may appear to be off the center and the hips as well as the shoulders can be higher than the left side, when one suffers from scoliosis. It is difficult for the heart as well as the lung to work properly if the scoliosis becomes more severe.
Origin of the Scoliosis
It has been derived from a Greek word “skoliosis” which is crooked. This condition occurs among children and occasionally among infants. It is more common among boys than girls and occurs in the middle of one’s childhood.
Causes of Scoliosis
- In about 80 to 85% the causes are unknown and is also known as idiopathic scoliosis.
- Genetic reasons.
- Having high arches or imbalanced muscles around one’s vertebrae.
- Asymmetrical growth in the spine among children.
- Muscle spasm.
- Unequal length of the leg.
- Problem at the time of bone formation could be the reason. It is possible that the bones of the spine may not have formed completely or they do not separate from each other.
- Birth defects.
- Cerebral palsy.
- Muscular dystrophy.
- Marfan’s disease.
- Changes in the spine due to arthritis.
- Weakening of the normal ligaments as well as the soft tissues, which when combined with bone spurs can affect the curvature of the spine.
- Abnormal curve of the spine.
- Spinal deformity.
Scoliosis is condition affecting the spine. The curvature of the spine, if not normal, can cause the condition.
