What are upper limb disorders?

Many people at work face upper limb disorders. These can cause much discomfort. Employers have to make sure that the workstations are built is such a manner, that the workers do not face any physical hazards such as these disorders. Let us have a look at some of these disorders.

Employers have to build workstations keeping in view the comfort level of the worker. This would help in enhancing productivity and protecting the employee from suffering from any injury. It is better to built proper workstations beforehand itself rather than after.

Upper limb disorders

  • Repetitive Strain injury (RSI) – This refers to chronic pain in any of the upper part of the body caused by overuse. Chronic lasts for a very long time. At times throughout one’s life. RSI affects elbows, arms, wrists, fingers, hands, shoulders, neck, or upper back. It is very painful. It is caused by repetitive work action performed over a long period of time. This injury can occur while doing manual work which is repetitive, typing or working with computers.
  • Musculotendinous disorders – Musicians are commonly affected by this disorder. The impact of the disorder would depend upon the how long the instrument has been played and the sex of the musician. Usually, women suffer more as compared to men.
  • Non-inflammatory disorders – This is caused by repetitive physical efforts such manual labor. Those who lift objects can suffer from it. Athletes, keyboards operators and musicians suffer from this disorder.
  • Musculoskeletal disorders – Common form of work related disorder that affects many workers in Britain. These are costly for the individual, health providers and business.

Upper limb disorders are problems faced by workers who have to perform tedious work.
