Work and Back Pain
Back pain is a health condition many people experience when they work. Overstrain, performing tasks beyond their capacity or even the usual routine work can prove to be tedious and make a person suffer from severe back ache.
Back pain can cause much discomfort. It can prevent a person from working. Many get confined to bed although it is not advisable to remain inactive. Activity while suffering from back pain is very good. It does not aggravate the condition.
Certain professions and works demand much physical work. Nurses have to run around meeting up to the demands of the patients. They have to often be on their feet for along time. Workers in the construction industry and factory workers have tedious jobs to perform demanding long hours and heavy work. These people often suffer from back pain.
One can avoid back pain by focusing on what causes this health problem and dealing with it.
Why does one suffer back pain at work?
- One has to lift heavy objects.
- Deliveries of goods can also cause back pain.
- Pulling heavy objects.
- Sitting for hours in a particular position like in front of a computer.
- Performing tasks beyond one’s capacity. Many tend to overstrain themselves while getting the work done.
Factors that often cause back pain:
- Force – If one exerts much force on the back it can result in pain as one may injure one’s back. For example, lifting heavy objects can result in back pain.
- Posture – Improper posture can also cause back in the back. A slouched position may result in such a health condition.
- Stress – Pressures on the work front as well home can cause much stress resulting in back pain.
- Repetition – Repetitive actions can also cause back pain. For example, one may have to bend several times to lift objects.
How to overcome back pain at workplace?
- Being fit – One must maintain good health. Regular exercise and eating properly helps. If one is fit one can perform many tasks.
- Relax – One must try to relax. Taking sometime time off from the tedious work on hand helps.
- Attention must be given to posture – One must always sit properly while working. Keeping the back properly aligned helps.
- Lift properly – One must be careful while lifting objects. One must not twist the back while bending. While lifting much of the pressure must be on your feet rather than on the back.
- Follow health work habits – Do not over do things. Late hours can cause strain and result in back ache.
- Reduce hazards – Try to minimize works that can cause physical damage to health or at least perform them in a carefully planned way.
- Plan your work – Avoid repetitive jobs, as far as possible. See if you can reduce the number of times you have to bend in order to lift objects.
One has to be careful while performing work at workplace. One must make sure that the work on hand does not cause much physical and mental strain.
