Egocentrism in Children
Egocentrism in the purview of psychology refers to comprehending situations and persons and events from the point of self, in other words, it is in incompletion of the differentiation of our self. People tend to view things from their perspective. They fail to appreciate the viewpoint of the other person.
Egocentrism is usually found among young children as being too young they are unable to appreciate or understand another person’s viewpoint.
Egocentrism among children
- Children who are below 7 have a lot of egocentrism as they are simply too young to understand what the other person is saying. In other words, they do their own thing and do not follow instructions.
- Only after they reach the ages of 6-12 children are able to appreciate what others have to say. Below 2 years they are in their infant state. Even as they grow a little bit older they are still not able to understand what others have to say.
- Between the ages group of 2-6 children definitely are egocentric. Ask them to pick up species of certain flowers and plants and they will not be able to do so.
- Children between the ages 7 to 12 years will be able to pick the species of flowers and plants which you want them to do so as they are able to understand and follow instructions.
- While speaking on the telephone, young children often do not say “yes” in response to query from the other side, but just nod their heads. They feel by being able to see their heads nod, they are able to see the other person. They usually have created a mental image of the other person and feel that he or she looks the way they have imagined.
Young children are egocentric in their perceptions. Their observations are based upon their own perspective.
