Neurological Complications of Diabetes

It cannot be cured but can be managed, through medication and injecting insulin. Nearly 60 to 70 % of the populations who suffer from diabetes suffer from neuropathy, neurological disorder.

Nerve problem can affect any part of the organs, such as liver, kidney, sex organs as well as heart. Nerves disorder can result in amputation of the foot as well as amputation. Smoking can cause this health problem too.

Nerve problem can affect a person anytime but generally those who are suffering from it for a longer period of time are at a greater risk. Those who find it difficult to control their blood sugar levels face this problem.

  • Neurovascular factors which damage the blood vessels that carry oxygen as nutrients to the nerves.
  • Heredity.
  • Mechanical injury to nerves.
  • Lifestyle factors such as use of alcohol and smoking.

Types of Diabetic neuropathy

  • Periphereal neuropathy – This affects toes as well as feet, hands, legs as well as one’s arms
  • Proximal neuropathy – This affects one’s thigh, hips, buttocks as well as legs.
  • Focal neuropathy – Facial muscles, ears, eyes getting affected, lower back as well as pelvis, lower back, abdomen, chest, thighs, legs, feet etc.

Prevention of diabetic neuropathy
One has to maintain the blood sugar levels within safe limits.

How is diabetic neuropathy diagnosed?

  • Heart rate.
  • Blood pressure.
  • Muscle strength.
  • Sensitivity to changes in position, to temperature, vibrations or light touch.

How can diabetic neuropathy be prevented?

  • Adequate physical activity.
  • Systematic diet plan.
  • Symptomatic treatment would much depend upon
  • Diabetic medication or insulin.

The pain that results on account of diabetic neuropathy is treated with the help of medication. Those suffering from severe pain are treated with antidepressants, opiods, anticonsulvants, opiod type of drugs.

Neurological problems of diabetes can affect the body organs and cause much damage to the functioning of the body system.
