Diet and Exercise can keep Diabetes at Bay
Diabetes can be avoided for a decade if one maintained proper diet and exercise. Such efforts cut the risk of suffering diabetes by one-third among those who are susceptible to it according to latest study.
About 11% of U.S. adults (24 million) are suffering from diabetes, usually Type 2, which is associated with poor diet and leading a sedentary lifestyle. Also about 57 million people who are overweight adults have blood sugar levels that are higher than normal, which increases the risk of having a heart attack or stroke and also the chances of developing Type 2 diabetes.
The new research shows us that by maintaining proper diet and exercise one can delay the occurrence of diabetes. This regimen of lifestyle is more effective as compared to the drug metformin or perhaps a placebo.
The study author, Dr. William C. Knowler of the U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases says, “Interventions that result in weight loss lower the risk off diabetes, and that lower risk appears to persist for a long period of time.”
For those who are at higher risk of developing diabetes, must lose weight, says Dr. Knowler. He also said that the drug metformin may help people to lose weight in case they are unable to do so through diet and exercise.
Diet and exercise are both very essential. Those who work on these areas that is keep a check on their calorie intake as well fat are 34% less at risk of developing diabetes.
Lifestyle intervention helps according to Dr. Knowler. Also, Dr. Anoop Mishra of Fortis hospitals in India said that, “the prevention of diabetes is important to curb epidemic of diabetes globally. Diet and exercise remain the most important modalities to prevent diabetes, and any drugs are less important.”
Dr. Mishra also said that “at-risk groups” needed to be identified, specifically the ethnic ones in order to be taught lifestyle management strategies. Mishra further says, “Young adults with family history of diabetes should be carefully managed along the same lines.”
Prevention of diabetes also reduces cost expenditure. Life-style changes can help reduce the incidence of diabetes and also save a person from incurring money on treating the disease. Cutting down on calories and increases the quantum of physical activity slows down the progression of diabetes.
