Fructose May Raise Blood Pressure

Sugar loaded sodas can raise one’s blood pressure. They contain too much fructose, that is a common sweetener, which can boost up one’s blood pressure. It is obvious that sugar loaded soft drink can also increase one’s blood pressure.

Corn syrup which is high in fructose is found in many syrups and processed foods. Americans now consume 30% more fructose as compared to 20 years back and suffer from obesity. In fact, researchers have linked the higher incidence of obesity with the higher consumption of fructose as well as high blood pressure.

Dr, Diana Jalal of the University of Colorado Denver Health Sciences Center as well as her colleagues in a recent study observed 4,528 adults who did not have any history of high blood pressure. Their fructose intake was observed and it was found that those people who had been consuming more than about 74 grams of fructose on a daily basis ( this is equivalent to 2.5 soft drinks that have been sweetened) had the risk of having their blood pressure boosted by about 28 to 87 %, depending upon their level of hypertension.

The study authors say, ” These results indicate that high fructose intake in the form of added sugars is significantly and independently associated with higher blood pressure levels in the U.S. adult population with no previous history of hypertension.”. They further added that future research is required in order to determine if lowering fructose intake will also lower blood pressure.

The study meetings were scheduled to be presented at the annual general meeting of the American Society of Nephrology which was to be held from Oct. 27th to Nov.1st.at San Diego.

Obesity among Americans is on the increase. Naturally, taking fructose would add to the existing pounds. Obese people are at risk of high blood pressure. If they consume sugary soft drinks or sugary syrup which contains fructose, then they would gain additional weight.
