Mediterranean Diet Good for Type 2 Diabetes
The Mediterranean diet, which is very popular, is beneficial for those suffering from Type 2 Diabetes. It helps people to stay off blood sugar lowering medicines. It also helps one to lose weight and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
These facts were highlighted by Italian researchers. These researchers also observed that about 70 % of those suffering from Type 2 diabetes who were on low fat diet required diabetes medication. On the other hand only about 44% of those who took Mediterranean diet required such medications
The results of the study have been published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine September issue.
Why Mediterranean diet is good for Type 2 diabetics?
The author of the study Dr. Dario Giugliano, who is professor of endocrinology as well as metabolic diseases at Second University of Naples in Italy, says that the Mediterranean diet is “safe and tasty to delay the introduction of anti-diabetic drug therapy in newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetic people.” He further adds that this type of diet also is useful in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, mortality and cancer.
Type 2 diabetes is on the increase. Lifestyle changes can prevent this disease. Obesity is a major cause of it. One must control one’s food habits. Regular exercise as well changes in dietary habits can help in managing this disease well.
How is Mediterranean diet beneficial?
- High in plant foods.
- Consists of nuts, cereals, legumes, fish.
- Olive oil has monounsaturated fat.
- Moderate or less consumption of wine.
- Low intake of red meat.
- Less poultry.
Dr. Guiglianao also says that that Mediterranean diet is less in carbohydrates.
