More Fruits, More Vegetables Means Cancer Risk for Smokers

Smokers are at a higher risk of developing colon cancer if their intake of fruits and vegetables is high as compared to nonsmokers. This was revealed in study conducted by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.

According to a statement issued by the institute, people who eat 600 grams or more vegetables and fruits a day appear to have 20 to 25% lower chance of developing colon cancer than people who eat 220 grams or less.

In the case of smokers the consumption of fruits and vegetables appears to increase the risk of colon cancer. Therefore, protection against colon cancer depends upon one’s smoking habits.

A study official said that this observation did not imply that smokers should avoid eating greens. On the other hand, he felt that they should stop smoking.

Colon cancer is cancer of the intestine and is a common occurrence in the age group of 50 in North America. About 1 out 20 people are affected by it. Early detection helps in chances of complete cure. Usually, a diet high in fiber consisting of fruits and raw vegetables reduces the risk of colon cancer. But the present study says that smokers who have more of fiber are at risk of developing colon cancer. The advice given by the study members to smokers is to cut down on smoking rather than give up taking a diet which is high in fiber.

Smokers have to think twice before lighting a cigarette.
