New Polyp Detection Method Can Be a Cost Saver

Optical technology is beneficial for physicians to detect small colorectal polyps during the colonoscopies. Money can also be saved with the help of this method. These facts have been revealed in recent research.

The study authors have explained the technique in the report published online on November 10th in the Lance Oncology. In the report, the authors have explained that the technique could be a substitute to histopathology, which requires more of testing and can turn out to be a costly affair.

Colorectal cancer happens to be the second-leading cause of death due to cancer. It is outranked by lung cancer. It is likely to kill 49,920 people in the U.S. this year, according to the American Cancer Society. At the same time early detection will enable doctors to remove the pre-cancerous polyps which could prevent deaths.

In the study, British researchers had examined the records of the 363 small sized colorectal polyps that were found in 130 people. They aimed at determining whether the optical diagnosis was right.

They observed that optical technology permitted colonoscopists to correctly pinpoint up to around 93 % of small colorectal polyps. This happens to be of the same level as histopathology.

The study authors concluded by saying,” Optical diagnosis for small colonic polyps could become acceptable standard of care in routine non-academic clinical practice.”

What are colon polyps?
It is growth on the surface of our colon. It is also known as large intestine. At times one can have more than one colon polyp. They can be flat or raised.
