Home Remedies for Cholera

Cholera is an infection that is caused by Vibrio Cholerae bacteria. It is disease of the intestine. The person suffering from it experiences severe dehydration as well as vomiting. Due to heavy loss of fluids, this disease can be fatal and cause death. It is contagious and spreads through water, food and infected feces. It spreads through air and touch. It is advisable to have separate clothes and utensils for the patient so that it does not spread to others.

Home Remedies for Cholera
Below are some of the most effective home remedies for cholera:

  • Lime Juice – Have lime juice every day. It kills the cholera bacilli.
  • Mix a glass of fresh juice made of cucumber leaves with a glass of coconut water. Let the patient drink in doses of 30-60ml. It helps in overcoming thirst.
  • Onions – Grind around 30 gm of onion along with 7 black peppers. Let the patient have it in 2-3 doses per day.
  • Add little sugar to clove oil and have it daily. It strengthens the immune system.
  • Mix onion juice with lemon juice and have it daily. It provides complete relief from cholera.
  • Having mint juice is good for the cholera patient.
  • Powder asfoetida powder, mango endocarp and camphor in equal amounts and mix it with mint juice. Having this paste daily is very beneficial as it provides relief to the cholera patient.
  • Mix juice of onion with asfoetida powder and have it daily.
  • Give boiled water to drink. Add a clove to it as it will reduce the thirst for water.
  • Having the paste of onion along with camphor gives much relief to the patient.
  • Fresh juice of Bitter Gourd leaves – This is beneficial to the cholera patient, particularly when the disease is in its early stages.
  • To increase fluid in the body take about 1 litre of boiled water and mix about 8 or 4 teaspoons heaped with sugar( brown, white or honey). Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Have it as much as you can.
  • Grind about 2-4 Margosa leaves with 3-4 black peppercorns and let the patient have it in a cup, which is full of water. The patient should sip it slowly.
  • Celery leaves infusion – Take little celery leaves and grind them into a paste. Boil them in about 1 1/2 litres of water till only half remains. Administer this cooled decoction every 15 – 20 minutes, till the stools thicken. Once the stools thicken stop the process. At the same time continue to have oral rehydration liquids.
  • Clove – water decoction – Grind about half a tablespoon of cloves. Boil it in about 2 litres of water till it becomes 1 litre. Filter, cool and have several times in a day.
  • Take about 1/8th of a teaspoon consisting of nutmeg powder, infuse it in a glass of water, cooled and mixed with similar amount of coconut water. Take half a cup every day to reduce the severity of the symptoms.
  • Tender coconut water is good for rehydration. Take it with one teaspoon of drumstick-leaf juice and add honey to it.
  • Grind about 6-8 holy basil as well as 6-8 Margosa leaves with little bit of asafoetida powder. Roll it up into a small pill along with jaggery. Take it 2-3 times with water. Helps in the treatment of cholera.

Causes of Cholera
The primary causes of cholera includes:

  • Bacteria – Vibrio Cholerae on account of contaminated water, food, and droplets.

Symptoms of Cholera
The top symptoms of cholera includes:

  • Mild diarrhoea which is followed by sudden and violent purging.
  • Stools are watery, loose and grayish-brown. Diarrhoea is normally accompanied by vomiting and nausea.
  • Feeling thirsty.
  • Restless.
  • Increase in temperature.
  • Fall in blood pressure.
  • Leg cramps.
  • Abdominal pains.
  • Dehydration.

Cholera can be quite debilitating. It can be fatal. One can go in for home remedies to treat it but medical supervision is essential. Consult your doctor immediately if you have the symptoms.
