Home Remedies for Dropsy

The condition occurs when soft tissues get swollen due to excess water. A person may suffer from edema (dropsy) due to congestive heart failure. Edema develops in the lower part of legs and the feet by the end of the day, when fluid builds up due to the upright position maintained during the day. The muscles start aching due to the accumulation of fluid. The skin around the affected area becomes very taut and looks shiny. Swelling occurs also around the eyes during sleeping hours at night, which is known as periorbital edema.

Home Remedies of Dropsy:
The most common home remedies of Dropsy includes:

  • Pineapple - It contains chlorine which helps in stimulating the kidney and remove the waste products in the body. It provides relief to the body from waterlogged condition.
  • Indian Squill - This herb has diuretic properties and causes an increase in the discharge and secretion of urine. Slice the bulb and use it in doses of 20 to 30 gm.
  • Arjuna - Mix thirty grams of the bark of the herb with a cup of milk and use some jaggery to sweeten it up. Take it every morning when the stomach is empty.
  • Black nightshade - It can be taken as a vegetable or decoction. Boil 30 gm of black nightshade in half litre of water till the quantity gets reduced to 1/3rd. One can take it twice in day.
  • Lime water - The entire stomach should be covered by a large towel that can absorb well which has been dipped in lime water. Squeeze out the towel.
  • Exclusive fruit diet for about 5 days to be followed by restricted diet.
  • Have fresh grape, orange lemon or apple juice for breakfast, 2 potatoes cooked with their skin, French beans, raw vegetable salad with olive oil and lemon juice.
  • Hot water bath twice daily.
  • Chew 2-3 cloves or bitter gourd.
  • Bel tree juice is good.
  • Margosa leaves tea can also be taken.

Causes of Dropsy:

  • Genetic factors.
  • Biochemical predisposition.
  • Physical injury.
  • Allergies.
  • Inflammation within the body.
  • Hormonal imbalances during PMS.
  • Protein deficiency in diet.
  • Liver diseases.
  • Obesity.
  • Thyroid disorder.
  • Weak heart muscle.
  • Heart failure.
  • Malnutrition.

Symptoms of Dropsy:

  • Swelling in the ankles.
  • Bloating of tissue.
  • Weight gain.
  • Fluid retention.
  • High blood pressure.
  • In the case of liver disease, swelling appears near the legs and abdomen.
  • In disease of the heart, swelling occurs in the lower part of the body and becomes more towards the evening.
  • In kidney problem, swelling is around the eyes and the face swells up.

Dropsy, which is also known as edema can be treated with home remedies.
