One such finding is that mild to moderate depressed people crave for food items rich in carbohydrate. Is the opposite also true?

Craving Crabs : Is it Depression?

  • A research study was carried out on this subject way back in November 1995 at the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Clinical Research Center, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, United States.
  • The researchers found that intake of carbohydrate foods resulted in the release of the feel good hormone, Serotonin.
  • However, the intake of protein rich foods were not found to cause this effect.
  • The observed effect was believed by the researchers to be the cause of the craving of carbohydrate foods by depressed people.
  • Serotonin hormone also regulates blood pressure, reduces pain sensitivity and causes the onset of sleep.
  • All these additional properties of this all essential hormone are found to be in undesirable states inside the body of depressed and obese people.
  • They experience difficulty in getting sleep, are always at the risk of developing high blood pressure condition and experience more pain.
  • To get relief without popping pills or sweating it out in the gym, most of the depressed and obese people get addicted to the intake of carbohydrate rich food items like chips, ice creams cookies and candies.
  • The study revealed that eating carbohydrate foods made the depressed people feel better in just 20 minutes.
  • Unfortunately, these food items enhance the complications by increasing the body weight further.
  • This damages the self esteem of the patients and they develop a sense of helplessness towards their body weight control.
  • Some researchers hold opposing views for the craving of carbohydrate foods and do not believe that it is related to depression in any ways.
  • They are of the opinion that depression is triggered by external factors and results in the drop of the feel good hormone serotonin in the brain.
  • They blame it on the age old custom of taking snacks in the evening between 3.30 pm and 5.00 pm instead. This time period is known as the Universal Carbohydrate Craving Time.
  • Experts do agree that excessive intake of carbohydrate foods can cause an addiction towards them.
  • This can lead to the development of undesirable situations like going at any length to get carbohydrate foods to satiate the mood swings.
  • The display of such tendencies by a person calls for medical help immediately.
  • The body does require a significant amount of carbohydrates to function effective for the whole day.
  • But, it is the rate at which this nutrient is provided to the body which decides the fallouts.
  • Carbohydrate foods with low glycemic index can always be kept handy to satiate the 4 p.m. hunger.
  • These food items like pop corns provide the much needed glucose energy to the brain without raising the blood sugar level in the body beyond normalcy.
