Harmful Effects of Betel Quid with Tobacco
Betel quid taken with tobacco is also popularly known as ghutka. How Does one take Ghutka?
One places a pinch of it in the mouth between the gum and the cheek. One then gently sucks it or chews it. Then excessive saliva formed due to chewing maybe spit out or swallowed.
Where is Ghutka used?
Ghutka is mostly used in the Indian subcontinent (Pakistan India, Bangladesh). Betel quid along with tobacco is used extensively in the Southeast Asian countries (Myanmar, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Papua New Guinea and Guarri).Betel quid without the tobacco is available in nonperishable product that is commercially manufactured in countries belonging to the Indian subcontinent, and is popularly known as pan masala. A betel quid freshly prepared either without tobacco or with tobacco is called pan.
Harmful Effects of Betel Quid with Tobacco
- Can cause oral precancerous lesions.
- Oral sub mucous fibrosis, which is precancerous lesion indicative of stiffness of oral mucosa, or rather the inability to open the mouth.
- Oral cancers of the lip, tongue, mouth and pharynx.
- Esophaegal
- Pregnancy risks. Pregnant woman who has ghutka can deliver a low weight baby.
- Nicotine addiction.
