What is Kayam choorna?

Kayam Churna is not a typical traditional Ayurvedic medicine. It is instead a proprietary Ayurvedic medicine. That means its formula is not derived from or mentioned in any conventional Ayurvedic manuscripts. Kayam churna offers natural and long-lasting relief from digestive complaints.

What ingredients are present in kayam churna?

Kayam churna is an amalgamation of strong purgatives. Most of the ingredients are heat generating and antispasmodic in nature. All of them stimulates the appetite. All the ingredients contribute to getting rid of a wide range of digestive issues and its adverse effects.

  • Senna leaves. These are the major ingredient of Kayam churna (around 50%).
  • Ajwain(around 11.5%)
  • Haritaki (around 8%)
  • Saindhava salt or black salt (around 18%)
  • Nishoth/ Trivrit (around 3%)
  • Svarjika Kshara, a carbonate of soda prepared from plants (around5%)
  • Yashtimadhu/ Mulethi (around 4.5%)

How to use Kayam Churna

The standard dose of Kayam Churna is 3 to 6 grams (1-2 teaspoons). For mild constipation, one teaspoon is enough. Take the Churna with warm water (hot water increases the efficiency of the churna), preferably at night before food. One should not take more than 6 grams of it per day.

Things to remember:

  • Never take fatty food when under this medication
  • If you are using other medicines, take it half an hour before or after taking the dose of Kayam Churna.

Is kayam churna safe for all?

Nishoth in Kayam churna has an abortifacient property, and the effect of Kayam Churna on the newborn baby and breastfeeding baby is not known yet. Therefore, avoid its use during pregnancy and lactation.

Children below 12 years are not supposed to take this medicine.

Swarjika Kshara in kayam churna can bring about sperm count and affect the quality of sperms. Therefore, men suffering from sperm-related problems or planning for a baby should avoid prolonged use of kayam churna.

People with diabetes should use this medicine only after consulting a doctor.

Kayam churna contain salt and licorice. Patients with hypertension and high potassium levels and the person who is on a diet with low sodium intake should use this medicine only under medical supervision.
