Turmeric is a powerful healer as it contains curcumin. It has a lot of medicinal properties that are beneficial for health. The spice has been in use in India for more than 2,500 years. It is popularly used in cooking in the East and can be made available in powder or pill form. It was initially used as a dye.

Cuisine is made tasty using Turmeric, which gives a yellow hue to it. It adds flavor to the dishes. Turmeric belongs to the ginger family. It has a bitter but bland taste.

A German study conducted in 2003 highlighted its antioxidant activity, as it contains curcumin and several other polyphenols. In India, research is being done to see if curcumin can treat diabetic patients and prevent health complications due to the disease. Spanish research claims that Turmeric can reduce the effect of high-fat diets and help liver function by breaking down fatty tissues.

Health Benefits of Tumeric

Diabetes

Gooseberry or Amla is a wonder herb rich in vitamin C and good for diabetes too. Take 1 tsp of Turmeric mix in the Amla juice, and take it once every day. Check its effectiveness by monitoring your blood glucose levels regularly

Fever

To get relief from mild fever, you need to make a decoction by mixing 8 ounces of water, 1/2 tsp of black pepper, 1 tsp of turmeric powder, and a small piece of ginger. Take this 3 times a day. For high fever, you might want to see a doctor

Cough

One of this wonder herb’s best uses is for cough, which gives sure relief. Mix 1/2 tsp of Turmeric in 1 ounce of warm milk and take it 2 times a day. For throat irritation due to cough, make a paste of turmeric and rock salt and coat it on the throat. It would give fast relief from the problem

Cold

Mix turmeric powder in pepper and jaggery and add it to warm milk. Take this 3 times a day. Alternatively, mix 1 tsp of powder in 1/4 tsp of ajwain with a cup of boiling water. Once the water cools down, add 1/2 tsp of honey. Take this 2 times a day for quick relief

Fungal Infections

As we have already seen, Turmeric has antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties, which work great for fungal infections like scabies or urticaria. A paste of raw herbs with water could be applied to affected areas like fingers and toe crevices, and within a few days, the results start to show. In the case of urticaria, the turmeric piece has to be taken internally. Take a small piece of rhizome on an empty stomach before breakfast in the morning. It would prevent further eruption and cure the existing ones

Blackhead

Turmeric is used daily in most parts of India for its cosmetic values. For blackheads, make a paste of the herb with mustard seeds. Take a small pinch of this paste and touch it on the blackheads before sleeping. Next day in the morning, wash it with gram flour

Mumps

The swollen glands due to mumps could be cured using this herb. Apply a rhizome paste with neem(margosa) leaves on the infected glands. Within 24 hours, it would start showing results

Acne

As mentioned above, the high cosmetic value of the herb also gives fast results when used on black spots or acne. Make a paste using gram flour and Turmeric in equal amounts and mix it in curd. Apply this paste on the face and neck and leave it there for 1-2 hours. Wash it off with warm water. This preparation not only helps in getting rid of acne problems but also leaves behind a glowing face that looks fresh

Wound

Turmeric has been used extensively in the Indian subcontinent for wounds since ancient times. Just sprinkle the powder on the wounded or bleeding surface, and it will stop bleeding immediately. To increase its efficiency, one could mix quick lime in the powder before using it

Cancer

At Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology Hyderabad link, India, researchers have found that curcumin which is found in Turmeric is one of the most important anticancer agents and chemopreventive. It also benefits in reducing weight, detoxifies liver, treats psoriasis. It also acts as a natural pain killer. However, it is in no way could replace the regular medication taken for these diseases. It can work with conjunction with the regular therapies to treat ailments faster.
