Alcoholism is a bad habit. It is more like a disease that engulfs a person. A person simply cannot do without taking alcohol. They need their daily requirement. The habit is a drain on the budget and affects one’s health.

An alcoholic husband is difficult to deal with. A wife has to endure his tantrums, ill-temper, and often beatings. Financially, much of the home budget is spent on purchasing alcohol.

The family suffers a lot. With less income on hand, as most of it is spent on purchasing alcohol, it becomes difficult for the family members to meet both ends. The stress of an alcoholic husband or father is too much to cope with. Most alcoholics are ill-tempered.

Alcoholic Husband

The question that arises is how to tackle alcoholic husbands. Let us see how a wife handles a husband who drinks.

Tips to Deal with an Alcoholic Husband

#1 Understand

The wife must be very understanding. She must try to appreciate that her husband has a problem and must be dealt with compassion, not harshness. It is said that love, kindness, and compassion can conquer many things, and winning somebody’s heart is one of them.

However, every person cannot be changed, and there is a limit to what one can tolerate. But giving love a chance to change somebody’s habit should always be the first plan of action. If and only this option fails, one should go for other methods.

#2 Nagging

Stop nagging at your husband. He might have realized he has a problem and might be planning to leave his habit. Nagging at him might make things worse and negatively affect his efforts and the relationship as a whole. Too much nagging could frustrate him and push him further into the problem.

#3 Ignore

If your husband has a drinking problem, it should be brought to his notice that something is wrong; his habit is coming in the way of your relationship and affecting the kids as soon as possible. Ignoring it could lead to more significant problems that might get out of hand in the future and lead to difficult situations.

Most wives try to ignore the problem and think this too shall pass. Staying together and doing nothing could lead to further misery and even depression at some stage.

#4 Counselor

It is wise to see a counselor in the early stages of an alcohol problem as it could be cured easily. Be supportive in every way to help him get out of the problem. A person could become short-tempered, shout, or restless while undergoing counseling, which is part of his drawl process. Giving him full support could help him eliminate the problems and build strong relationships.

One can encourage the alcoholic husband to consult a counselor to eliminate his habit. Seeking appropriate medical advice is good.

#5 Support

Get support from family or friends to deal with the problems. There are a lot of organizations, too, that help people deal with their pain and provide necessary support to them. One could meet others with similar problems and learn from their experience here. One could also know how to deal with the issue through expert-supported groups.

#6 Leave

At a certain point, one must decide that enough is enough and leave. If children are affected by the alcoholism of their father and everything else has failed, then it is always better to go. The option of leaving the husband should be taken after all the efforts of dealing with the problem have failed.

Physical abuse or violence should not be tolerated in any way, and if it becomes a habit, then the husband must be taught a lesson. Getting help from the law should always be an option if violence is used for children.

#7 Boundaries

Setting boundaries is necessary. Tell him upfront as to what behaviors are acceptable and what aren’t. Understanding and support are essential, but only upto some extent. Having firm boundaries is vital to protect yourself and the family from potential danger or harm. These boundaries can make him realize the severity of his addiction.

#8 Seek Self-care

Remember to take care of yourself. Dealing with an alcoholic partner can be often tiring. Join support groups for partners of alcoholics. These groups can provide solace, understanding, and coping strategies. Ensure that you’re mentally and emotionally fit to handle the challenging situations.

#9 Final Note

A wife no doubt has a tough time dealing with an alcoholic husband. She has to cope with him as well as her family pressure. Managing the home budget may be difficult as the alcoholic husband spends more money purchasing alcohol. Do whatever suits you, but never ignore the problem or live in denial that the problem is not big and will be over soon.

I’ve never read such rubbish in all my life. If you realise you have an alcoholic husband, leave him or change the locks on your home. I tried to copy and ended up severely unwell. He ripped my life apart.
