Reiki during pregnancy can be a most gentle, yet powerful, non¬invasive healing for symptoms such as tiredness, low back pain, morning sickness, mood changes, high blood pressure, stress and emotional disruption experienced both during and after pregnancy.
I remember one mother who was suffering from tiredness and lethargy but also had constipation. Immediately after the healing session she claimed that not only had her tiredness moved on, but also her bowels, and she had to rush off to the toilet! During pregnancy, because of the fear of change, there can be an emotional ‘holding on’ and this can often result in being unable to ‘let-go’ of your waste matter.
Reiki does not perform instant miracle cures; however, with regular treatment, which ensures better circulation, harmonized energy levels and a stable and confident emotional, mental and the spiritual outlook, elimination of toxins, you might be surprised at your body’s ability to heal and maintain itself. Even apprehension and fear experienced in the late stages of pregnancy and the distress at the impending labor can be alleviated through the deep relaxation, balance and confidence gained through reiki healing.
Since pregnancy can be such a major life-changing event it can often resurrect buried emotions, fears or insecurities from the past— so-called ‘unfinished business’. Again, reiki can unblock and heal past hurts and wounds in a most graceful and beautiful way. A weekly treatment is recommended, especially around the heart, abdomen and solar plexus areas, to enable the body to handle all the changes and demands that are put upon it.
Reiki can also be used to send healing energy to the baby. I have known babies to give an excited kick as soon as they feel the energy flowing in. By working directly by holding the ‘bump’ the healer can channel energy that babies will take according to their needs.
The reiki healer is merely a channel, a transmitter; it is your own body’s wisdom that knows what it needs to be well and will take the Universal Energy as needed.
I remember one mother-to-be who came to me just before a crucial test. She complained the baby must have been picking up her anxiety as it had been disturbed all night. I worked a great deal around the mother’s abdominal area and her heart and temple area to calm and distress her. At the end of the session, both mother and baby were relaxed.
Being pregnant can create a sense of being out of control of your own body. Some women have described it as their body not belonging to them any more, from the day to day changes in their bodies to the sense of invasion experienced from medical interventions. Reiki can enable a sense of regaining some of that control, a balance and a grounding so that, even though you are experiencing a life-changing event, you can be in control; no matter what surprises await you, you will be able to meet the challenges with a sense of deep calmness and knowing.
Sadly, acceptance of complementary treatments that can work alongside medical intervention has a long way to go in this country. I am aware of a woman’s hospital in the Czech Republic where all the doctors and nurses give reiki and the noticeable results are that the births are easier and the mothers more relaxed and in control.
While no one would argue about the benefits of medical intervention for the mother-to-be, it is important that you are able to use complementary techniques, which can be supportive, in working alongside doctors as this can enable you to have a real sense of having some control and participation in the process of your pregnancy.
The cost of a reiki treatment is usually equivalent to the cost of other hands-on therapies like massage. Some healers will offer a discount if you book a number of treatments in advance.
