Obesity in AmericaObesity is on the rise in the United States and in this article we are going to discuss some of the top facts about obesity in America. Young as well as old are facing this problem. Lifestyles have changed and people do not have the time to cook wholesome meals. They tend to eat fast foods and as a result put on weight. Often daily exercise is not in their routine. Children spend hours in front of a television watching their favorite show and eating chips and drinking colas. Naturally, they have no outdoor exercise and become fat.

Obesity is a health condition that must not be ignored. Those who are over-weight can suffer from diabetes, heart disease as well kidney problem. One must eat sensibly and exercise regularly to get rid of the excessive body weight.

Obesity is a health problem as well as an aesthetic problem. People tend to ridicule those who are obese. A fat woman will not look so attractive as a slim and well proportioned woman. Visits to the gym does help one to shed those extra pounds.

America is the land of prosperity and generally viewed as a country where health problems can be well treated. Let us see how obesity affects their population and how it is being taken care of.

  • Obesity among children has risen three times in the past thirty years.
  • Obesity related deaths have risen to 300,000 per year. This figure is second to tobacco-related deaths.
  • Native Hawaiians suffer from heart disease, diabetes since they are obese.
  • The total number of obese children in Hawaii is twice the number of those in the entire United States.
  • Pima Indians who live in Arizona suffer from higher levels of obesity as compared to their Mexican counterparts, although they have the same genetic and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Many of the migrants to the United States suffer from higher levels of obesity as compared to their relatives back home.
  • Americans tend to have more fast-foods since they do no have the time to cook a wholesome meal. Their life-style is such that they do not have sufficient time to eat a nutritious meal. They eat hamburgers and have chips and French fries as their meal. Fast foods have become very popular all over America. Those who are working prefer to eat out as they have no time to cook.
  • Children also do not play much outside and spend more time watching television. They also eat fast-foods and put on weight. They are made of saturated fats and carbohydrates which are highly refined. They contain lot of sodium and sugar.
  • Americans also eat processed, refined foods which are also not very healthy. Refined products contain a lot of sugar as well as hydrogenated oils which are very fattening.
  • Americans also consume a lot of dairy products such as cheese, butter etc which also increase fat. One must go in for low fat products although they also contain some element of fat.
  • The average American child is influenced by television advertisements and tends to eat foods that are advertised there, mostly fast foods and colas. Most of the foods advertised are toxic in nature. These foods have no nutrients.
  • Medical bills have also been on the increase on account of obesity as large amounts of money has to be spent on various obesity- related diseases, such as diabetes, cardio-vascular disease, liver, blood pressure etc.
  • Many are trying to lose weight but are unable to do so as they do not know how to lose weight.

Obesity is a major health problem in the United States. Americans are leading fast-paced lifestyles and are not having sufficient time to eat a proper diet and exercise regularly.
