    Using Cuticle Trimmer
Dead skin of the cuticle can be removed using an extended device with a razor-sharp end known as a cuticle trimmer. While it is one of the essential accessories for a manicurist, any individual aware of the benefits of nail care can possess it. Using a cuticle trimmer should be known to all to prevent infection at the base of a nail. Hanging nails can also be trimmed appropriately. In this way, they can be prevented from getting hooked to the clothes and causing pain.

The protective seal-like structure between the nail plate and the skin is technically known as the cuticle. Some people have rough and thick cuticles depending on genetics and lifestyle factors. It becomes essential for these people to trim these flexible outer coverings from time to time to ensure good nail care. To attain this objective, they must know how to cut the cuticles using the specific device meant for that purpose.

How to Use a Cuticle Trimmer

    • The hard outer layer of the nail can be softened by soaking it in warm water or nail oil
    • The coverings of the nails can be pushed slightly by using a cuticle pusher to provide an even appearance to the nail post-trimming
    • Dead and excess skin of a cuticle can be trimmed by gently applying pressure on the handle of the trimmer
    • The blade should be directed towards the nail, not the cuticle. The sharp razor of the trimmer in an upward sweep separates the skin from the nail
    • The edge of the cuticles might have hangnails, which should be trimmed properly by directing the cut away from the other fingers

    Precautions while using Cuticle Trimmer

    • Sanitize: Always disinfect the trimmer before and after use to prevent infections.
    • Sharpness: Make sure that the trimmer is sharp. A dull tool might tug or tear and cause damage.
    • Gentle Pressure: Use light and gentle pressure to avoid cutting deep.
    • Trim Only Excess: Trim the loose parts only or excess cuticle. Never cut into the living tissue.
    • Avoid Over-Trimming: Over-trimming might lead to infections and damaged nails. Be very cautious.
    • Use After Softening: Soak hands in warm water before going for the trim. You can also use a cuticle cream to soften the cuticles before trimming.
    • Use Proper Tool: Make sure you’re using a tool designed for cuticle trimming.
    • Steady Hands: Keep your hands are steady. Avoid trimming when hands are shaky.
    • Inspect Before Use: Do not use the trimmer if there are signs of damage or rust.
    • Store Safely: After the usage, store in a dry place.
    • Avoid Sharing: Do not share it to prevent spread of infections.
    • Limit Frequency: Don’t trim cuticles often. Allow them time to heal and grow.
    • Seek Professional Help: It’s best to seek a professional manicurist if your hands are shaky or you have sensitive skin.
    • Treat Injuries Promptly: In case there is a cut, clean and disinfect the area with antiseptic liquid immediately.

Things to Know Before Using a Cuticle Trimmer

The cost of a trimmer in the United States is around 8-10 dollars. However, some professionals prefer scissors over trimmers. This is because scissors can allow a certain amount of distraction of concentration while trimming and the procedure need not be executed to precision.

On the other hand, trimmer usage calls for the exact movement of the device. Holding a magnifying glass in one hand and maneuvering the trimmer using the other hand is advisable. This ensures that the sharp edges of the device do not cut the skin at any point of the trimming.

Trimming the cuticles should be done in moderation. The chances of developing infections are high as the outer covering of the skin and nails is exposed.

The roughness of the cuticle can be reduced considerably by applying a moisturizer on the nail edges. Cuticle creams and oils are available in the market, which can reduce the thickness of these outer coverings.

People who are conscious about health hesitate to use a sharp device like the cuticle trimmer for their feet. Diabetic people should be extremely cautious while using the trimmer on their feet as they are prone to infections. In the best interest, they can consult a doctor before using it.

If a hangnail develops pus, it warrants immediate medical attention instead of learning how to use a cuticle trimmer.
