What is a Father’s Role in Parenting

A family is made of a mother, father and their children, and if you do not know what is role of a father in parenting, you are doing it all wrong. A father is an important and irreplaceable part of a child’s life. There are a lot of duties that fall to the share of the father. Traditionally, the father’s role was that of a provider. However, with the mother’s stepping out of the house as well, fathers have begun to take on many more roles, some of which are very challenging.

Though there are many responsibilities that a father usually undertakes, there are five of them which completely stand out.

What is a Father’s Role in Parenting
    Loving the Mother
The most important role for a father is to love and respect the mother of his children. Psychologists believe that the best thing a father could do for his children is to respect their mother. This way, they not only cultivate a warm and loving environment, but also lead by example. Children can learn a lot from their fathers and if the father is respectful towards the mother, the children will learn to respect others as well. Children are well-adjusted in families where the fathers are respectful towards the mothers.

    Spending Time
Spending time with the children is important. Whether you have sons, or daughters, they require your time and attention. It is very important for your children to witness affection and closeness in their parents, because that will make them grow up with a strong sense of security. It will help them cultivate healthier relationships of their own, and increase their chances for happiness as well.

    Be Role Model
Children follow by example and as a father, it is your duty to set the example. You can teach your children everything you want them to be, by simply practicing those things in front of your child. A father who is a drunk and abuses his wife, sets a very bad example and is leading his child to ruin. Addictive or hypocritical behavior makes your children lose respect for their fathers. Not only that, your children will soon begin to emulate you and you will lose your control over them.

    Teaching the Children
Children need to learn a lot of things in life and this is not something they can learn from their school. You need to be their teacher in life and teach them the lessons that you might have learnt from your experience. There will be a lot of questions along the way and your children may not always see your ways, but they will always know that they have you to fall back on. Some of the classic lessons in life that you can teach them are those of love, respect, decision making and morality. When they are young, parents act as a child’s superego. This responsibility is as much of the father as the mother.

    Be the Leader
Our societies are still patriarchal in nature. The father is still seen in the role of the head of the household. A father who is a strong leader, helps the children become stronger people with a very high self-esteem and that is what is a father’s role in parenting.
