Obesity is the most common risk factor in some of the world’s leading causes of death such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and stroke. While obesity is not a disease in and of itself, a lot of complications may arise from it. Clogged arteries, joint pain, and the urge to watch daytime talk shows are a few. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure they say, so it’s better to nip obesity in the bud by daily exercise than pay the exorbitant price of your inaction later.
We gain weight when our calorie intake is more than we get to spend in a day. Our body stores the unused calories in the form of fat. The thing is, the food we consume nowadays is chock full of calories. Plus, we don’t even have to spend a lot of energy to hunt it down, skin it, and cook it. This makes for a very lopsided calorie to energy spent ratio, which in turn leads to weight gain, and eventually, obesity. The only way to prevent this would be to cut back on the calories and do more activities. Exercise is a great way to do this.
The tornado ball slam is an exercise which would not only help you lose weight, it will strengthen and tone your core muscles too. In order to perform a tornado ball slam you need to have a tornado ball. A tornado ball is basically a ball at the end of a rope. It weighs around twenty-five pounds, but it may also come in other weights or sizes. You can buy one or make your own. There are a lot of online do-it-yourself videos showing you how to make one.
The tornado ball slam is exactly what it sounds like. You simply swing the ball around and slam it against something. There are a variety of ways to perform this but here’s a step-by-step on the easiest type of tornado ball slam.
Step #1. Gather your equipment. A tornado ball, and a sturdy rubber mat (you’ll need this to land the ball on, otherwise your equipment won’t last very long). You’ll be swinging the ball around so this exercise needs to be done in an open area.
Step #2. Place the ball on the mat and hang on to its handle with both hands. You should be standing at least one step away from the ball. Be careful and stay away from other people or objects. The tornado ball slam is a rather vigorous exercise and no one wants to get hit by a 25-pound ball.
Step #3. Tug at the ball to swing it behind your head in a clockwise direction. Land the ball on the mat and swing it again, this time going in a counter-clockwise direction.
The ball should land on the mat every time it completes its rotation. Alternating directions will exercise all your abdominal and lower back muscles. At the beginning, do only as many repetitions as you can. Most start with five and work their way up.
Another version of the tornado ball slam uses a wall. You stand facing away from the wall and slam the ball back and forth your left and right side. You can also do a tornado ball slam on your knees and lying down. The exercise described above is a great way to start your tornado ball workout routine.
