Gooseberry is known for its medicinal and culinary usage. However, the chemical components and nutrients of this fruit can lead to many conditions called Gooseberry allergy. The state of the immune system of individuals is the deciding factor in the severity of this condition. Awareness of the signs helps in early diagnosis and treatment.

Gooseberry Allergy

Gooseberry Allergies: Science Behind the Reaction

Gooseberry, known scientifically as Emblica officinalis Gaertn. or Phyllanthus emblica Linn and commonly referred to in India as “amla.” It is a fruit rich in Vitamin C and has lots of nutritional benefits. Like other fruits, it contains proteins that, at times, in a few individuals, are treated as foreign objects by immune systems. When this happens, the body produces immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies specific to these proteins. On exposure to gooseberries, these antibodies release histamines and other chemicals that lead to allergic symptoms. No widely recognized protein in gooseberries (amla) is known to cause allergic reactions like proteins in peanuts, which have known allergens.

Gooseberry Allergy Symptoms

Below are some of the top and primary Gooseberry allergy symptoms:

  • Runny nose
  • Sore eyes
  • Itching
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Tingling mouth
  • Redness around the lips
  • Facial redness
  • Facial swelling
  • Diarrhea
  • Lip swelling
  • Throat swelling
  • Tongue swelling
  • Asthma
  • Skin flashing
  • Hoarseness
  • Low blood pressure
  • Eczema
  • Itchy eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Hives

Blood tests like RAST and skin patch tests help identify the chemical responsible for causing this condition. It is called an allergen. Severity is also known from these tests.

When the body’s natural protection mechanism cannot identify this fruit’s nutrients, they are perceived as threats. The immune system releases antibodies like IgE, which tries to find and flush these allergens out of the body.

Undesirable chemical reactions are initiated within the body because of this over-response. Symptoms appear externally owing to these reactions.

Gooseberry Allergy Treatment

There is no way known as of now which can cure this condition completely. Treatment aims at curbing the signs to the bare minimum. There are preventive techniques like avoiding gooseberry and food products containing it.

While mild signs may not require treatment, moderate symptoms may require nasal sprays, eye drops, and antihistamine drugs for treatment.

In some people susceptible to Gooseberry, a severe life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis is seen where the allergy spreads all over the body, quickly affecting the functions of major organs. Epi-pen injection should be given to the patient in such conditions and hospitalized as early as possible.

Knowing some of the critical Gooseberry allergy symptoms is better to diagnose it early and prevent it from occurring.

Gooseberry Allergy FAQ

Can you be allergic to Gooseberry?

Yes, it is possible to be allergic to Gooseberry. This fruit contains a protein called a-gallic acid that can trigger an immune response in some people. Symptoms of an allergy include rash, hives, swelling of the lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, and even anaphylactic shock. Contact your doctor immediately if you think you may react to gooseberry juice or other food containing this ingredient.

What are the side effects of Gooseberry?

When consumed in food, Gooseberry is generally considered to be safe. There are a few side effects that should be noted. First and foremost, Gooseberry can cause diarrhea if eaten in large quantities or taken on an empty stomach. Additionally, the consumption of gooseberries during pregnancy may result in congenital disabilities due to the high iron levels in this fruit. Finally, people with liver problems should avoid consuming Gooseberry as it contains high levels of oxalic acid (a compound that can damage the liver).

Why should we not eat Gooseberry at night?

Gooseberry is often eaten in moderation throughout the day. However, because it contains melatonin, which can help to regulate sleep cycles, people should avoid eating gooseberries at night. The brain secretes melatonin during regular nighttime hours and helps to promote deep sleep. It also improves mood and reduces anxiety levels. Therefore, consuming large amounts of Gooseberry late at night may disrupt your nightly routine and disrupt circadian rhythms.
