Single parenting is tough. In fact, some women are not marrying and they are having children out of wedlock or in live-in arrangements initially, and remain alone later on with the child. The concept of marriage is slowly getting eroded in many countries among the urbanites. This issue is being hotly debated in social and academic circles as negative effects of single parenting cannot be ignored. The responsibilities that a single parent has to shoulder often results in mind-blowing issues.

List of Top 6 Negative Effects of Single Parenting

Single parenting involves personal, social or official difficulties. Couples separate for various reasons. Yet, there are problems and naturally one cannot ignore the negative effects of single parents. Here are valid reasons:

    1. Finances

Finances are very important to bring up children as one has to ensure that they are well fed and get the best of education. Joint finances means that that there is more to offer to the child. One has to work late hours at times to earn more. Children have to be kept in crèches and involving expenditure. One may have to forgo one’s life-style preferences in order to provide the best to the child.

Financial limitation frustrates a single parent who tends to take it out on the child. After all, these youngsters desire pleasures in life and at the same time you as a parent may have your own expenses to meet. Children compare themselves with their peer group and want their parents to give them what other children have. A single parent may not be able to meet up to these expectations of the child. This can have a negative impact on the child as he or she feels deprived. It is important for the single parent to take time out from tight daily schedule and explain the reason for not providing these comforts or luxuries.

    2. Quality of parenting

This is a major issue bothering single parents. Children need both parents for healthy growth, but yet parents separate if it is impossible to live under one roof. Daily bickering negatively impacts the child. It is easy to provide for children when both parents are together; the needs both physical, psychological and financially are better met. More finances are available at one’s disposal in case both parents are working. Also, one may tend to share one’s problems with the children, financial and emotional, while the latter are not grown enough to understand these issues. Efforts should be made to improve personal relationship with children and spend quality time with them. If the children are ignored then they will suffer psychologically and may require professional counseling at a later stage in their life.

    3. Self Esteem issues

The children of single parent may develop low self esteem on account of being neglected. They tend to compare themselves with other children belonging to secured homes and this could make them feel inferior. Extra effort has to be made to encourage them and appreciate their efforts at home chores or at school. More time must be devoted to them to make them feel wanted.

    4. Divorce

Divorces do negatively affect a child as he or she is deprived of love and affection from both parents. It may be better for the child to be with a single parent; but, if the separated parent does not visit, the child feels bad. Children of divorced parents do face innumerable problems, both at the emotional and materialistic level. They certainly grow up differently from other children, and, in case, the single parent does not give adequate attention, they suffer from maladjustments within society. On the other hand, living with a single parent, a child may have better defensive mechanism to face life-situations.

    5. Cognitive problems

Mentally, children of single parent do at times suffer from setbacks in terms of gaining self-confidence and also feeling on par with their well-to-do peer group children who belong to “stay-together-parents” background. Due to parental neglect the child becomes a delinquent. A single parent may suffer from depression and may not be able to give adequate love and care to the child or children.

    6. Stress

Single parenting involves a lot of stress, as financial constraints are there and emotionally one is drained on account of over work. The child gets neglected. A stressed parent will not be able to provide adequate attention to the child.

Single parenting involves issues that need to be considered seriously before one opts for it.
