Home Remedies for Gas Pain

Gas is nothing but the presence of air in the digestive tract. Many reasons for gas accumulation in the digestive tract include improper food, improper digestion, and an unhealthy lifestyle. It is seen that foods rich in carbohydrates are known to cause more gas than foods rich in protein or fat. Hence, it is advised to have a healthy diet comprising fewer carbohydrates, especially for people prone to gas and gas-related health issues.

The accumulation of air in the digestive tract is known as gas. It is seen that generally, people get away from gas by either burping or bypassing gas through the anus. The combination of carbon dioxide, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and methane is collectively known as gas. Some people also have the presence of sulphur in their flatus.

Gas pains can be troublesome. The pain can be so intense that you feel it’s a severe illness. The following passage provides possible home remedies for gas pain relief, causes, and symptoms to help you acknowledge the problem.

List of Home remedies for Gas pain

1. Ginger

The carminative effect of ginger helps break up and force intestinal gas from the body. It was further proved to be effective due to its potent antiulcer activities (1).

Another study conducted by the Medical Association of Thailand further cements the effectiveness of ginger. As per the study, it was found that ginger is highly effective in expelling gastric gasses. It also recognised its highly efficient antiflatulent properties (2).

Below are the 2 application methods –

  • Make a mixture of ginger powder, pounded carom seed(ajwain), and black salt in equal quantities. Take the mixture after a meal (1 gram) for fast relief from gas pain.
  • Take a small piece of ginger. Sprinkle a few drops of lemon juice over it. Add a pinch of black salt and take this while having a meal.

2. Cinnamon

Cinnamon bark is believed to possess many medicinal properties, as per Indian Ayurveda. In the 19th century, physicians from the US also used it for various medical conditions. “German Commission E” recognized ginger to be effective in the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and in the treatment of loss of appetite (3).

  • Make a powder from cinnamon and boil it in a glass of water. Take this while it is a warm half hour before a meal. This will prevent the formation of gas.

3. Asafoetida

Asafoetida, popularly known as Hing in India, is used while preparing food as a spice. It is also used while cooking to neutralize the gas-causing property. Though further research is required in this regard to prove it scientifically. However, it has proved to be very effective as per traditional practices.

  • Make a powder out of 2 grams of Asafoetida (Hing) and mix it in warm water. Take about 20ml of it twice a day.

4. Fennel

  • Prepare a mixture of 10 grams fennel, 10 grams cumin, and 5 grams anise. Mix them in a boiling glass of water. Leave it for 20 minutes. Take a cup of this mixture 30 minutes after the meal.
  • Try peppermint, chamomile, or fennel teas to relieve gas pain. Peppermint contains menthol, which appears to have an antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscles of the digestive tract. This is one of the most effective home remedies for gas pain.

5. Cumin

  • Black cumin could be ground and mixed with honey. One can use it for the treatment of flatulence.
  • Additionally, mixing thyme, ajwain, and mastic in equal amounts in the above mixture could increase its effectiveness. One could take this before breakfast and in the night. 3.5 grams of the mixture could be taken at a time.
  • One could also mix black cumin and ajwain in equal quantities. Take it at the start and the end of the meal. This is very effective and has been used since ages to cure gas problems.

In a study, it was found that bloating treatment with Cumin extract was beneficial. It reduced symptoms like mucus in stool, incomplete defecation, abdominal pain, bloating, and fecal urgency. [4]

6. Carmint

A study was done to find the effect of Carmint on IBS symptoms. In a study, 32 IBS patients experienced less abdominal pain and bloating than those on a placebo. The results showshow that Carmint benefits IBS patients when paired with loperamide or psyllium. These benefits are attributed to its antispasmodic, carminative, and soothing properties. [5]

7. Removing toxic material from Colon

Suppose you experience a burning sensation while passing stool and the stool is foul-smelling. In that case, it is a sign that your Colon contains toxic material. Follow a fasting program to eliminate these toxins.

  • Do not eat food when you are tensed, upset, or overtired
  • Do not drink liquid while eating food as this prevents proper digestion by diluting stomach juices
  • You can temporarily cut high-fiber foods and gradually increase the intake over the weeks.
  • Eat several small meals instead of eating two or three larger ones daily.
  • One of the simpler and effective remedies for gas is to increase the amount of fluid you drink, especially water.

8. Gas Causing Foods to Avoid

Avoid consuming foods that affect you the most, such as high-fiber foods, dairy products, soda-content drinks, beer, and other food products that cause excess gas. Some of the top foods to avoid are given below –

  • Lentils and beans as they contain indigestible sugars, which leads to gas production.
  • Fruits and veggies like carrots, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, prunes, and apricots.
  • Sorbitol and artificial sweeteners are difficult to digest. They are digested by bacteria, which results in gas. [6]
  • People with meteorism or tympanites should avoid dairy products as these lead to bloating.
  • Wheat, due to its gluten content, also causes gas.
  • Foods containing carbohydrates cause gas. On the other hand, protein, as well as fats, cause less gas.
  • Sugar such as raffinose, fructose, lactose, and sorbitol. Raffinose contains a large quantity of complex sugar. One comes across fewer amounts in cabbage, sprouts, asparagus, broccoli, other vegetables, asparagus whole grains, and other vegetables. Fructose is found naturally in onions, pears, artichokes, and choke. It is also used as a sweetener in soft and fruit drinks. Sorbitol is a sugar found in its natural form in fruits such as apples, peaches, pears, and prunes.
  • Soluble fiber is dissolved easily in water and tends to take on a gel-like, soft texture in one’s intestines. This is mostly available in oat bran, peas, beans, and most fruits. Soluble fiber gets broken down once it reaches one’s large intestine and produces less gas. Insoluble fiber passes through one’s intestines and produces less gas. Some of the vegetables, as well as wheat bran, contain such kind of fiber.
  • Eating foods like squash and cucumber is generally considered safe due to its high water content. However, they also cause bloating and gas due to their interaction with stomach temperatures. [7]

9. Yoga for the digestive system – Mayurasana

Mayura in Sanskrit means peacock. Mayurasana (the peacock posture) helps properly function the digestive system. It enhances the circulation and supply of blood to the digestive organs and hence could prevent lots of digestive-related problems.

  • Kneel keeping your knees twelve inches apart
  • Place the hands on the floor between the knees with your wrists facing forward and fingers pointing backward
  • Support both sides of the navel with your elbows
  • Balancing on your hands, raise your body and legs horizontally. First, raise the upper part of your body and then the legs
  • Stretch your legs a little wide like the letter V
  • Remain in this posture for a few seconds
  • Return to the original position by slowly folding your legs and placing your knees on the ground. Then sit on your soles

10. Change in Habits

One can take medication, change one’s diet and lifestyle to reduce stress and ensure less intake of swallowed air. Limiting high-fat foods is also very good. Bad food habits, anxiety, and other causes result in abdominal pain. Improved diet and practices can help in dealing with this health condition.

Let us have a look at some of how stomach gas can be prevented –

  • Eat Slowly: Eating fast can interfere with proper digestion of food.
  • Walk: Walk for a minimum of 500 mtrs after meals.
  • Reduce Fatty Foods: Digestion is slow if you take a lot of fatty foods.
  • Avoid food : With the trial and error method, you can find which foods affect you most. Avoid them.
  • Reduce Smoking: While inhaling smoke, you can swallow air too hence avoid it for quick relief.
  • Straw: Avoid straw while drinking. You might swallow air while using a straw for drinking liquids.

Causes of Gas Pain

Below are some of the primary causes of gas pain –

  • As we eat or drink, we also swallow air. Sometimes, we may swallow air when we are nervous. This air finds its way into your lower digestive tract.
  • One of the main causes of gas pain is when bacteria in your colon ferment carbohydrates that are not digested in your small intestines.
  • Even some healthy foods such as beans, peas, and whole grains can cause gas to form, as these foods are high in fiber.
  • Dairy product consumption can also cause gas formation. It may be because your body cannot break down dairy foods’ sugar (lactose).
  • Certain medicines, such as antibiotics and constipating drugs, also cause gas pain as they disrupt the normal bacterial flora in your bowel (part of the intestines).
  • Artificial sweeteners like sorbitol and mannitol in some sugar-free foods can also cause excess gas if your system cannot tolerate it.
  • Do eat in a hurry. Eating when you are on the run and under stress can interfere with the digestion process and cause gas.
  • Smoking can also increase the amount of air you swallow.

Symptoms of Gas Pain

The primary gas pain symptoms include sharp pains and jabbing cramps in your abdomen, and these pains can change location quickly. Sometimes, the pain is so intense that you feel it is a severe illness like a heart problem, back pain, and many others. This generally occurs when gas builds up in your intestines and is not expelled. The voluntary or involuntary passing of gas, either as belching (burp) or as flatus (gas generated in or removed from the digestive tract), is also a symptom of gas pain.

Bloating and Gas Pain

Many people feel they pass gas or burp very often, which can be embarrassing and cause much discomfort. The average adult tends to pass about 1 to 3 pints of gas daily, which comes out of the anus about 14 to 23 times a day. Burping occasionally before having one’s meal is quite normal.

The amount of gas one produces depends upon one’s diet and other factors. Of course, most individuals who complain of excessive gas pass the usual amounts.

Source of gas

Swallowing air is the most crucial source of the formation of the gas. It is, of course, quite natural to consume small amounts of air while eating, drinking, and swallowing saliva. One may swallow more air when eating food rapidly, chewing gum, gulping liquids, and even smoking.

Most of the air is got rid of through belching, which results in only a relatively small amount of air passing through the stomach into one’s small intestine. One posture affects how air passes into the small intestine.

Belching

Belching is either voluntary or may occur unintentionally. Involuntary belching is quite normal after one has one’s meals. This releases the air that enlarges or stretches one’s stomach. Belching is familiar with certain foods that tend to relax the ring-shaped muscle. Located at the lower end of our esophagus, it tends to join the stomach. Such foods are chocolates, fats as well as peppermint.

Indigestion

Some carbohydrates are not easily digested, and this results in gas. Quite several vegetables contain raffinose, such as Brussels sprouts, cabbage, asparagus, whole grains and broccoli. These cause a lot of flatulence and gas. Consuming a large amount of lactose can cause gas production.

Diseases

Those suffering from certain diseases such as scleroderma or diabetes usually experience the slowing down of the small intestine. This can result in the growth of bacteria inside of one’s bowel. This causes poor digestion of nutrients as well as carbohydrates. These can also cause gas production.

Functional dyspepsia

This refers to persistent pain in the upper part of the abdomen. Nerves that carry messages from our bowel movements tend to be overactive in the case of IBS. Many people complain of bloating.

Irritable bowel movement

This can also cause gas production and bloating. Many changes in one’s bowel movement include diarrhea or constipation. Nerves that carry messages from one’s bowel may be overactive.

Anus irritation or esophagus

Those with irritation around their anus due to hemorrhoids or several other problems may also face much discomfort and gas passing. Those who suffer from irritation of the esophagus also experience burping, which is quite painful.

Diet restrictions

One must avoid foods that tend to aggravate the condition. Foods include dairy products, milk, some types of fruits, vegetables, artificial sweeteners, and even carbonated beverages. One must maintain a record of foods that bother a person.

    laying down usually allieviates the pain, sitting is better than standing which usually is so painful i get doubled over. ive been getting gas pain issues more and more lately but cant pinpoint why. some things are certain, i wont drink beer anymore. some times its hard to tell what caused it. eating small amounts of food is safer than large meals. Any suggestions? enzymes? acidolpholis?

      Some people have severe gas pains from wheat beer and no problem from other types. Beer is made in many different ways. If you check the brewing method of the type you consumed, you will probably find the item you are having a reaction too! Do a little experimentation.

    tiffany – im suffering from the exact same thing. someone told me i might be lactose intolerant but that doesnt explain everything. onions, red meat, bear, dairy, large meals, eating after skipping a meal, all these things seem to cause problems for me. It like im alergic to food. If you find any solution please let me know!

      OMGosh,so funny! I read bear too and thought i miss read it cause I’m in pain,till I read your reply! Thanks for the laugh! I’ve had food poisoning for 5days now and today is the day with too much gas,major bloating and of course major gas pain! I have Ulcerative Colitis which gives me gas so bad I get into the fetal position and cry! But this time is the food poisoning from a major restaurant! So I’m off to have an organic ginger tea to see if it helps if not gas-x ultra does help alot,I only use if the pain is real bad! Good luck to you all

    lol, Tim. And what’s with the candle wax person?
    Anyway, my husband has some of the worst, smelliest, painful gas. I’m trying to find simple remedies that the average person might have around the house. The baking soda works for his heartburn, but no luck with over the counter gas relief medications. I will see if he’ll eat ginger… And never thought about lactose intolerant… Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ~AJ

    I have had these and it usually is a result of too little water- dehydration and too much high acidic foods like hot salsa and such. Sometimes it takes a day or so for me to fell the effects of the poor diet but once in a while when the pain starts it can be flooring. The best thing you can do is keep a box of chewable fast acting Gas-x extra strength. This is works so fast- matter of 10 to 15 minutes and stops the pain. The other answer is to eat a balanced diet and try to reduce stress, to prevent this from happening as much.

    Yes, my gas usually works it’s way to my lower back if that makes any sense. Also I find my chest gets really heavy when I have bad gas. I just ate Coriander seeds, hopefully that will work, I read it on another site. This forum is hilarious too…Timothy you’re a comedian!

    I drank ginger tea during a really stressful time and it prevented the usual painful gas. Now i know why. I should have had some this morning, hence while I’m on my back reading up on a solution.

    I took gas x 20 min ago, not working too well.
    Lying on my back is a more comfortable position.
    I’m going to try Baking Soda and lay off the X-Large Salads(like the one i ate yesterday), and stop inhaling breakfast (like i did this morning).

    Chewing the foods properly before eating it helps in better digestion of the foods. If you do not chew the food properly then this would create extra gas which is going to hurt you. It is all about habits as some people have a habit of not chewing the food and eating everything fast. Another important herb that helps in gas is dandelion. Dandelion since centuries is helping people with indigestion problem. Make a tea out of dandelion leaves and take it 2-3 times a day to have faster relief. Dandelion is primarily a bit sour so you might mix honey to it. Another important home remedy for gas is Parsley. Just take it raw after your food.

    My 2yr old son suffers from horrible gas pains on a daily basis. His stomach becomes so distended it is scary. You can actually feel the gas bubbles in his stomach by putting your bare hand on it.

    The drs think he is suffering from IBS-PI (post infection), as a result he has these gas pains. It is so sad to watch. I give him 1 regular strenght Gas-X, which does not seem to be helping.

    Any advice for someone do small? He alfo takes a digestive enzyme with each meal, that doesn’t seem to be helping anymore.

    Any advice would be so helpful.

      Does he drink milk? He may have to switch to soy…..my babies couldn’t handle milk based formula & the drs just said carry them around all day …yeah right! I switched to soy based formula.
      He is probably lactose intolerant…should not eat sugar of any kind! Worth a try

      Your son might have indigestion problems. Try to make him eat more acidic fruits like pineapple and papaya. Fresh orange or grapefruit juice helps too. Have you try something called Gripe water? Originally a European formula to release gas pain for babies. I hope my info. helps…

    I think the best home remedy for gas is coconut water. Just take a glass of coconut water and it will cool down your stomach. After 10 to 15 minutes, the gas will start coming out. Just take care not to take too much coconut water as it has side effects too. 2-3 glasses in a day is perfectly fine.

    I think ajwain seeds work wonders for gas problem. It is very effective for any type of stomach pain and it is one of the better laxatives too. So, in one go you can get yourself cured for gas, constipation and bad breath. Yes, you can keep a tsp of carom seeds in your mouth for 5-10 minutes and chew it slowly in order to get the juices out of it. After that gulp it down to your stomach. It will keep your mouth fresh for 2-3 hours and you would pass the stool next morning effortlessly. Now, what do you want more from a herb.

    People swallow air which could be also called as gas while eating which is called as aerophagia. Swallowing small amount of these airs is very normal but some people knowingly or unknowingly swallows a large amount of air due to which problem arises. Lots of this air is belched but a small amount of air goes into the digestive tract which is the major cause of worry. The person with large amount of these gases could belch too much or pass these gases through anus. Some blockage in this process and people could have gas pain in the stomach.

      Other then the problem mentioned, the problem of gas could also occur to people who have deficiency of some types of enzymes which are responsible for breaking some types of sugar such as sugar that is there in milk and milk related products(lactose). These type of people accumulate excess amount of gas in their stomach due to which bloating or abdominal pain could occur.

    I have suffered terrible gas pain on almost a daily basis for about 15 years. About 5 years ago I found a miracle cure. Though it is not convenient to attempt in public places, and you have to be at least mildly athletic to do it, HANDSTANDS almost always immediately cause the gas to move (usually out), thus, relieving the discomfort. You might have to repeat the process a few times but this has worked for me and literally changed my life. Sometimes before a meal in a restaurant my stomach will hurt so bad I have to excuse myself and do a handstand or two in the restroom. Yes, I have had a couple of interesting encounters when folks have asked me “what in heaven’s name are you doing in there?” I explain the whole situation and they usually chuckle. Since I’ll never see them again in my life I just go on my merry and have a comfortable dinner having eliminated my pain.

    Just had a bad session with gas, bloating. Today, only white rice. Small amounts every 3 hours with 2 enzyme tabs. So far… no gas. It as been brutal as some of you know only too well. Doc says as you are being a food detective for yourself to eat just one thing a day (all day) and something different the next day. Helps you to identify your problem food. Work in food categories, leave out wheat & dairy & sugar to begin with since they have a history of problems with people.

    i have such bad pain now for 2 days and i have been drinking maalox but to no avail πŸ™ and for some stupid reason the walmart near my house doesnt sell gas-x this hurts so bad i cant stand up and lying down doesnt completey kill the pain if fact it does practically nothing to help ! can someone help me please

    Have IBS-Simethicone doesn’t work for gas but I find fennel seeds brewed for 10 minutes & the yoga position of knees very effective

    I think pawanmukt asana could help people with gas problems. This is a yoga asana in which you could pass the excess gas easily. Let me know if that was effective in your case.

    I have extremely bad IBS with bloating and sharp pains and cramps. Activated Charcoal tablets work well and fairly quickly. Ginger and peppermint teas also work, and the heat from the tea helps relax your stomach and intestines. Drinking lots of water helps as well, more than anything else, If you are in a position where frequent bathroom trips are ok.

    I found the worst things for acid and bloating are alcohol, coffee (the darker/stronger the worse), red sauces and meat, chocolate, milk and cheese, and candy.

    Using a heating pad and lying on your tummy can also help, as can stretching exercises that lengthen then compress your abdominal area.

    GREAT SUGGESTION TO ALL GAS PATIENT.
    One of the reasons of gas might be intestinal worm infection(parasites in abdomen). You might want to take Albendazole(400mg) tablets after proper consultation from your physician.     I suffer with serious gas pains and when it strikes I cannot sleep or lie down the pain is very intense I just keep walking and cringing I have tried ginger, Menthol, gas X, black salt and even ate raw garlic but to no avail any other remedies?

      I have had very bad gas pain in my abdomen and also my back. Eating a stick of raw celery has helped me in the past. Try it you will be surprised.

    I am definitely going to get some of the Pepcid like everyone earlier in this string of messages did, maybe you can try that too. I do know that from being in the food industry for a very long time, vinegar is good for you and especially if you are eating salads. Maybe try a oil and vinegar based dressing if you are eating salads as much as I do. Vinegar breaks down the vegetables easier for your digestion, and it is not supposed to be bad for the acidity level for your stomach either.

    After searching the web for for relief from gas pains that were in my back and head, not allowing me any sleep. I was so disappointed with the advice I got, some of the remidies were so perplexed you have to had a chemistry degree with all the chemicals. Then there are those that lecture you about what causes the problem.

    Please try this simple remedy that I got from an old lady that worked for me
    Simply make a cup of tea with no sugar then sprinkle some black pepper in the cup, drink it as hot as you can take it. In about an hour or so it will be comming out of your ears and all lol

    OMG..I went through this last night. Nothing made me feel okay, until I had nothing else in the house I made some chamomille. Don’t know if having tea helped somewhat, or just the gas was passing. πŸ˜‰ But I thought it was my appendix..i was about to go the ER. Now it is morning, and my side is sore from he freaking pain of last night. Sad thing is I am so afraid it will come back!!!!! I guess I will get to store today and buy some remedies in case this ever happens again…the pain was intense, I could not even breathe properly..nor lie down, or do anything.

    Sorry I have another question…As I have mentined in my other post, my side os sore from where the pain was last night…could this have been caused by GAS related issues..or could this be my appendix? Now I stating to worry and fear this will come back.

    hi everybody, i need some clarification if possible. 2 months ago i was diagnosed with GERD, it has fairly passed now, am feeling much better, no more puking… πŸ™‚ but last night i had some VERY scary pain in my chest and although i know it was from Gas, i got anxious… i don’t know if it was something i ate, maybe beetroots?? does anyone has gas due to beetroot?? damn this sucks,,, its been like 3 months now that i havent been able to lead a normal life!! first it was the Gerd, and then i had anxiety issues, am still working on that, btw, EFT work wonders on anxiety and now its the occasional gas problem… real scary, now i don’t feel the stabbing pain much but still am so scared that it would return, i feel bloated and like i want to keep burping! which i can’t cause my Gas don’t come out so easily…. any remedy??? i had wanted to try the pepper tea stuff but my Doc said i had to keep from spices because of the Gerd… any help please??? this this is seriously ruining my life!!!

      Roasted fenugreek in yogurt does the trick every time ,soreness will vanish ,u will feel on top of the world ,trust you me

    Try this ! Dry roast a few seeds of fenugreek till they turn red,mix with yogurt,set aside for half an hour,then eat it all.YOu will feel immediate relief ……trust me.

    Im almost five months pregnant and having severe gas pains. I havent had them this bad for a couple of years and I NEVER had gas pain this bad before I had a C-Section 5yrs ago. I have heard lying on your left side with your right knee benT and layed over your left leg helps expel gas and also putting your knees to your chest helps, but I cant seem to get in either postion comfortably. I have been drinking water all day, havent had anything but chicken broth to eat and have taken Gas X twice and even tried both postions and still no relief! Any pregnancy safe ways I can get rid of this pain!! I AM MISERABLE!!

    As I enjoyed reading this site and all the promising remedies, I found myself in tears from laughter, all starting with the candle comment – I thought my phone had skipped to a different site until I kept reading on! As I read, while in an awkward yoga position (in attempt for relief) sharing it all with my hubby, he chimed in with sympathy farts, at least 8-10 one after the other, then I realized since my bloating started I have only passed gas maybe a handful of times total in 3 days compared to the normal 14-23X/day as the article stated. I was released from the hospital a couple days ago with Hypothyroidism…awaiting seeing a specialist. Anyone else have this problem? Does it sound related?
