Several studies have been conducted to ascertain whether smokeless tobacco can replace cigarette smoking and help smokers quit Smoking. Some studies, for example, research done by “Department of Medicine, School of Medicine, University of Louisville, Louisville, KY, USA”, showed that almost 73% of smokers who swiched to smokeless tobacco were abole to quit smoking. In 1986, the Surgeon General of the Public Health Service showed significant health risks associated with smokeless tobacco. In the study it was shown that it is a major contributor to oral cancer. Can Smokeless Tobacco help quit Smoking?

Smokeless tobacco is itself very harmful to health. To eliminate smoking, a smoker may find it difficult to switch to smokeless tobacco. Here are a few reasons why a smoker cannot start chewing smokeless tobacco to give up Smoking:

  • Nicotine Addiction: Smokeless tobacco also contains nicotine like cigarettes. One can get addicted to it. Nicotine can cause much harm to health. One can suffer from serious illnesses and diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, etc.
  • Cancer-causing Chemicals: Smokeless tobacco contains 28 chemicals that can cause cancer. Naturally, it is not advisable to switch over to smokeless tobacco as a healthy alternative to Smoking.
  • Social Repulsion: Chewing tobacco and having to spit can be a disgusting habit. Socially, it can be repulsive and put off many people.
  • Inefficacy in Quitting Smoking: US researchers have claimed in a study conducted at the University of California San Diego that usage of smokeless tobacco does not help in quitting Smoking among Americans.
  • Cultural Factors: Cultural factors influence the switch over of a cigarette smoker to smokeless tobacco as an alternative to smoking cigarettes. This was highlighted in the February issue of the online journal Tobacco Control.

Advantage in a Switch over to Smokeless Tobacco

  • Elimination of Secondhand Smoke: The problem of secondhand smoke is not there. Passive smokers, those who do not smoke, need not inhale the smoke let out by smokers. Secondhand smoke can cause serious illnesses and diseases such as cardiovascular and cancer.
  • Nicotine Accessibility: One can have one’s share of nicotine even if there is a ban on cigarette smoking. Those addicted to nicotine can sniff or chew tobacco and enjoy the nicotine content.

Smokeless tobacco is equally harmful to health as cigarette smokers. It is not advisable to consider it as an alternative to Smoking. Both are addictive habits, and it is not easy to get over the practice of using smokeless tobacco or smoking a cigarette.
