Egg Allergy – Common Symptoms of Egg Allergies

egg allergyEgg allergies are the most common forms of allergies that occurs mostly during the childhood and one needs to be extremely careful in managing this condition. Most of these allergies may produce harmful reactions on the body by showing different kinds of symptoms and cause serious health concerns. The immune system of the person suffering from egg allergy responds by releasing antibodies that in turn leads to a chemical reaction in the body. As a result of a trigger of chemical substances, the person may show symptoms of egg allergy such as wheezing, breathing problems, headache, stomach upsets, itchy hives among others. In turn, these chemicals may also lead to problems in the respiratory and cardiovascular system and show adverse reactions on the skin as well.

Common physical reactions due to egg allergies

People prone to allergies may find both egg whites and yolks to be unfit for consumption. Their bodies may react negatively to such allergies by showing various physical symptoms of egg allergy as stated below:

  • Harmful effect on the gastrointestinal system: The gastrointestinal tract of allergic people may get greatly affected by signs of diarrhea, vomiting, and cramps with digestive related problems. They may be stomach upsets and cramps resulting due to egg allergies.
  • Skin related problems: There may be many skin related issues including redness and swelling with itchiness including swelling around the mouth. In addition, many people may also show signs of rashes around the skin.
  • Affects the Respiratory system badly: Most of the people prone to egg allergy may show signs of respiratory-related problems such as coughing, wheezing, runny nose, watery eyes including problems in breathing.

In addition to the above reactions, some people may suffer from adverse problems such as anaphylaxis leading to swelling around the mouth, throat that in turn affects the lungs and leads to breathing problems. There could be a sudden drop in the blood pressure levels in the body along with feelings of dizziness.

Egg Allergy Symptoms

Some of the top egg allergy symptoms are as mentioned below:

  • Hives
  • Asthma
  • Nasal inflammation
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Cramps
  • Abdominal pain
  • Rapid pulse
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Drop in blood pressure
  • Shock
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Swelling of throat
  • Lump in the throat
  • Narrowing of the lungs airways

Depending upon the condition of the immune system of an individual, the signs can be apparent anywhere within few minutes to few hours. Moreover, the severity of these symptoms also vary from person to person.

Blood test, skin pricking test and keeping a record of food items which cause this allergy are the available techniques to find the allergic signs and confirm this condition.

Care and treatment of egg allergies

In case you are suffering from allergic reactions due to consumption of eggs, then it is a good idea to seek medical advice from the doctor. Most of the time, people are asked to get allergic tests done to ascertain the factors that may be leading to these kinds of allergies and get the right care and treatment for this condition. Sometimes skin tests are also performed using extracts of the egg protein to find out the resulting reactions from such an allergy on the body.

During such times, all anti-allergy medications must be stopped as they may not show accurate test results. Blood sample tests and skin tests may help in the diagnosis of the problem and help in finding positive solutions to overcome the effects of such allergies. One of the best ways of avoiding such problems is to stop eating eggs and any products that contain eggs. For those suffering from severe allergies, epinephrine shot be prove to be the best solution in times of emergencies.
