    History of Arranged Marriages
Where and when did the concept of arranged marriages come into existence? Stop wondering and read the article to learn more about arranged weddings and their presence. The idea of arranged marriages came into being from ancient times. In the olden days, it was said that people belonging to the higher class married their sisters and daughters to safeguard their dynastic bloodline.

Since then, arranging marriages has become a way of life. The wedding ceremonies were a colorful event with good feasts and entertainment. No perfect evidence speaks to the occurrence of the first marriage. There were varied cultures with several legends related to the origin of marriage. To put it short, the history of weddings is almost as old as the history of humankind. The standard custom prevalent since then is that parents (elders in the family) arrange a suitable pair for their children. From past to present, marriages speak about romance and duties and responsibilities. The tradition of gifting rings and getting engaged was prevalent in ancient Romans. The ring here symbolizes an eternal union.

    History of Arranged Marriages

    Period Description
Ancient Civilizations (circa 2000 BC – 500 AD) Marriages in Mesopotamia, India, China for politics, trade, and status.
Medieval Times (500 AD – 1500 AD) European nobility used marriages for land, titles, and alliances.
Renaissance (1500 AD – 1700 AD) European elite marriages with growing emphasis on love.
Modern Era (1700 AD – Present) Decline in the West but persisted in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

    Cultural Variations and Constraints

Later, this culture was spread to future generations who included wedding laws in their cultures. For ages, the tradition of arranging weddings has been prevalent worldwide. The culture varies from one country to another. Background, wealth, social status, and group were and are still the main parameters considered while looking for a suitable match. A lot of merry and celebration is made before and after the marriage is fixed. The main scenario is selecting jewelry and shopping for new attires until the final day arrives.

Arranging a marriage is a custom in which the father (head of the family) searches for a perfect match for his children. In addition, there were certain conditions included to find the partners:

    1. They could not choose any close blood relatives or already married persons as the match.
    2. Soldiers were allowed to marry once they retired from their services.
    3. Marriages were not fixed with any foreigners.
    4. People having similar surnames were not permitted to marry each other.
    5. Same-sex marriages were not entertained.

It is mentioned in ancient European history that marrying the same sex was celebrated in countries such as Greece, Rome, and some regions of China.

The Present Scenario of Arranged Marriages

Today, marriage ceremonies include various traditions and rituals as part of the event. Exchanging rings and flowers is a common tradition prevalent in many communities worldwide. Through the ages, the concept of marriage remains the same. It is still considered a link that includes responsibilities and commitments between two people. Arranged marriages are still practiced in many regions of the world today. No doubt, over time, the rituals are followed with less rigidity. However, due to the sway of other cultures, people have built up a sense of personal choice. Today, the arranged marriage concept is declining in urban areas. But one can still find this culture existing in the rural regions.

What Lies Ahead for Arranged Marriages

The future of arranged marriages is challenging to predict. Technology is changing how people meet and date. People have choices now in picking their partners. However, many still value the family’s role in determining a life partner.

Even in dating apps, the core idea of arranged marriage is strong. Families consider social class, money, and culture over love, compatibility, etc.

Arranged marriages recently have changed a bit. Couples get time to get to know each other after engagement. Arranged marriages might look different in the future, but they won’t disappear. The focus will stay on long-lasting bonds, respect, and family roles. The concept of love cum arranged marriages are gaining momentum and are here to stay.
